2023 was one of the most difficult years for BHC in terms of what is happening in the global economy. A sharp decline in market demand, persistently high commodity prices and unpredictable interest rates had a strong impact on the economy and purchasing power of our core markets. However, last year is positively remembered for contacts with new customers, strengthening our position in the agricultural sector and the first steps towards greener energy. Also, during this very difficult time, enhanced relationships within the team are of great importance – we are stronger than ever and look optimistically towards the future.

BHC is a Gazelle again

BHC was recognized with Äripäev’s Gazelle title for the fourth time. Äripäev’s ranking of rapidly developing companies, or Gazelle’s TOP, has been published for 24 years in a row. BHC goes greener

BHC made a step towards greener consumption. Viljandi’s company Eleväli installed a solar plant with a capacity of 100 kW. The goal for us is to consume all the energy we produce. Residual energy, if there will be any, we sell back to the grid.

In August, we consumed approx. 11% from the solar energy. Since installation, using solar energy has saved 1,37 tons of coal and 1,63 tons of CO₂ emission. That’s a start.

Summer days and vacation news

On July 13, BHC had traditional summer days for our employees and families. It’s an event that usually takes place just before our summer vacation.

This year, the summer days were held in Vanaõue puhkekeskus. It’s a lovely place near Viljandi, with enough room for all of us. The event was coducted by Mart Saar, who had lots of fun games for our big and little ones. Families spent a joyful night and the next day we headed back home.

At the moment, all the factory is on vacation and we’ll be back on August 14.

Workplace health day at BHC

A workplace health day was held at BHC on May 5th. The goal of the day was to help prevent injuries caused by physical work and raise employees’ awareness of sporty and healthy lifestyles. The day was conducted by MyFitness personal trainer Kristel Raba.

The day consisted of a lecture and 5 men’s individual consultation with a trainer. Men were selected from 5 different departments in order to have the best possible overview of different work traumas. Trainer mapped the concerns of the employees and shared recommendations and exercises on how to prevent various specific work injuries in the future. The feedback from the workers was very positive and we believe that the day served its purpose.

BHC is expanding the team

From the beginning of March, our new Business Development Manager Artur Olszewski started working in BHC. Artur’s appointment is due to the rapid development of BHC and natural need to reach new markets. His main tasks are creating and maintaining customer relations. In addition, he works on finding new supply channels in order to optimize purchase prices. Artur has almost 10 years of experience, operating in the international market of hydraulic cylinders. ’’I feel great about this exciting opportunity to work with a team of professionals, who are also interesting individuals. Working environment is inspiring and I am sure I will improve myself here significantly’’- Artur commented. We wish him success in his new position.

Bonus system upgrade

In January, BHC upgraded its bonus system, which is based on NOOM production software. The system calculates a coefficient for each employee every month, taking into account the total minutes of working time of the selected period and the ratio of registered and reported minutes to the given standard times.

In summary, the computationally complex methodology gives a very simple and understandable result: the worker who most effectively uses the registered working time within the given standard time (fluctuation +/ – 15%), receives the highest coefficient and the largest bonus.

Year 2022 at BHC AS

BHC’s turnover in 2022 was €4.5MM (+36.3% vs 2021) and 40545 cylinders (+1788 units vs 2021) were produced. We have 34 full professionals working with us. We found new customers in new markets (Germany, Sweden) and began a cooperation with a high potential Finnish agricultural sector company.

The technology upgrade was according to the plan: a new Toyota SHE100 stacker, a Gardner and Denver air compressor and a TWP-505 twin-spindle machine were purchased. In connection with the addition of Ohra branch shelves, the shelf space for material storage increased by 125 m². Also, the ventilation system of the welding department was upgraded.

We started preparations of projection and construction works for the new painting chamber and for that reason, the production area is growing 550m² . The new painting chamber also provides more economical production and better final quality in painting.

In parallel with the extension, the Enterprise Estonia’s digital transition support for Enterprises was started. As a result, the entire production process will be fully digitized and the hardware related to production will be updated.

It was a busy and the most successful year in the company’s history.

Moving towards more economical energy consumption

Due to the increase in energy prices over the past year, Baltic Hydraulic Cylinders started an energy saving program. It included an inspection of the factory’s heating and ventilation systems and more energy-intensive production machines. We achieved 22,7% of energy savings in 3 months.

In addition, BHC decided to install solar panels on the roof of the production building in cooperation with the company Eleväli AS. The application for joining Elektrilevi has been approved and the construction works of the solar plant with 2x50kW inverters will start as soon as possible.

Preparations for the new project

In October, Baltic Hydraulic Cylinders started preparations for Enterprise Estonia’s project ’’Digital transition support for Enterprises’’ ( https://eas.ee/grants/digipoorde-toetus/ ) in cooperation with our partners Elister OÜ, Raditex OÜ and Astro Baltics OÜ. The purpose of this project is to support automation and to take digital technologies and robots into use. BHC is planning to fully digitize the whole monitoring of producing process, traceabilty and quality control. In addition, the painting line will be renewed and interfaced with current production software NOOM.
